Introduced in 2001, the .NAME generic Top-Level Domain is the sole TLD intended for personal websites only. These domain names can include personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other designations people are famous by. At the beginning, just 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you planned to acquire john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and second-level registrations were also allowed. Existing 3rd-level domains remained working.
